The Eclipse windmill, patented in 1867, was actually designed decades earlier by a Presbyterian minister working among the Ojibwe on the shores of Lake Superior, built simply to pump water up from a ravine to his mission homestead. It took nearly twenty years before the wider world discovered what he'd built.
Once barbed wire began fencing off the open range in the 1880s, Texas ranchers suddenly needed a reliable way to water cattle that could no longer roam freely to creeks and rivers. Windmills like the Eclipse spread rapidly across the Panhandle and West Texas, with the massive XIT Ranch alone running 325 of them across three million acres by 1887.
