THIS is exactly why I check viral posts before sharing them.
A post going around Facebook claims that “Oklahoma Superintendent Dr. Charles Bradley” suspended 122 students for protesting ICE.
Here’s the problem: there is no Oklahoma State Superintendent Dr. Charles Bradley. Oklahoma’s State Superintendent is Lindel Fields. (Welcome to Oklahoma’s Official Web Site)
Now, the 122 students part IS true. Mustang Public Schools gave 122 students in-school suspensions after they walked out of class during an anti-ICE protest. The district says the discipline was for unexcused absences/leaving class after being told to remain, not because of the political viewpoint they expressed. (Oklahoma Voice)
So somebody took a real event, attached a false name and title, removed important context, slapped “BREAKING” on it, and thousands of people started reacting.
And THIS is how misinformation spreads.
You don’t have to agree with ICE.
You don’t have to agree with the students....
