JUSTICE CATCHES UP: Ex-First Lady Arrested in El Paso
Bertha Olga Gómez Fong, wife of imprisoned former Chihuahua Governor César Duarte, was arrested in El Paso, Texas by ICE agents on March 25, 2026.
As president of the DIF state children's agency during her husband's 2010-2016 administration, she is accused of overseeing a $250 million peso desvío (embezzlement scheme) that funneled public funds through shell companies—with Mexican authorities holding a 2020 arrest warrant for her role in the corruption network that prosecutors say laundered money through El Paso and Miami real estate.
Her husband remains locked up in Mexico's Altiplano maximum-security prison facing organized crime charges, and now the same ICE agents who patrol the El Paso–Juárez corridor are holding his wife.
