The sun hung low over the desert, throwing long shadows across the Red River set. Dust swirled in the wind, carried by the pounding hooves of horses.
John Wayne stood tall, hands on his hips, his iconic hat pulled low. Beside the corral, a young man moved with the kind of ease you can’t fake—a rodeo champion named Ben Johnson, working as a wrangler.
That afternoon, Howard Hawks had a problem. The script called for a herd of cattle to cross a raging river. The water churned hard, the current mean. One by one, the stuntmen shook their heads.
“Too dangerous,” they muttered.
Ben just smiled, tightened his cinch, and said quietly:
"I’ve crossed meaner rivers than this."
