The Trojan Horse of Hanoi😱
Gulf of Tonkin. April 6, 1967. Douglas Hegdahl was a 20-year-old South Dakota farm boy serving on the USS Canberra. During a night bombardment, the blast from the ship's own guns knocked him overboard. He swam for 12 hours before being picked up by North Vietnamese fishermen. He ended up in the infamous Hanoi Hilton (Hỏa Lò Prison). The interrogators demanded military secrets. Hegdahl realized he had no rank and no information, so he came up with a brilliant defense: He played dumb.
He exaggerated his country accent. He stared blankly. When they handed him anti-war propaganda to sign, he shook his head and said, "I can't read. I never learned how.". The guards were stunned. They tried to teach him. Hegdahl spent days frustrating his tutors, pretending he couldn't remember the letter "A." Finally, the communists gave up. They nicknamed him "The Incredibly Stupid One". Believing he was a harmless peasant, they let him roam the camp freely to sweep the courtyards—a privilege no other prisoner had.
But while he was sweeping, he was spying. He sabotaged five enemy trucks by putting dirt in their gas tanks. More importantly, he became a human hard drive. Fellow prisoner Joe Crecca taught him a mnemonic device. To the tune of "Old MacDonald Had a Farm," Hegdahl memorized the names, ranks, and personal details of 256 captured Americans. He recited the list every day while sweeping: “Captain Smith… E-I-E-I-O.”
In 1969, the North Vietnamese decided to release three prisoners as a propaganda stunt. They chose Hegdahl because they thought he was too stupid to tell the press anything. Hegdahl didn't want to go—the POWs had a "Go Home Together" pact. But the senior ranking officer, Lt. Cmdr. Dick Stratton, ordered him to leave. Stratton told him: "You are the memory. You have to get the names out.".
When Hegdahl landed in the US, he didn't just speak; he sang. He recited the names of hundreds of men who the US government thought were dead. He provided proof of life for families who had waited years. He then flew to the Paris Peace Talks and confronted the North Vietnamese negotiators directly, exposing their torture and prison conditions to the world.
Douglas Hegdahl returned to the Navy as an instructor, teaching others how to resist interrogation. He proved that you don't need to be the strongest man in the room to be the most dangerous; you just need to be the one nobody sees coming.

My "two" are a mix...coffee in the A.M. and a Non Alcohol beer this afternoon...after having homemade pizza and watching the Hobbit end of the second and start of the third movie!
Crazy day attempting to gather tax documents - getting what I paid for dental was a trip as my insurance hasn't completed paying for last September's visit! And attempting to get my 1099-R and my 2026 annuity forms hasn't worked out as the phone lines are busy and it wouldn't accept my online info...I had to turn off my VPN to get to even log in! So I'll email them and see what happens. Enough about that ...probably TMI!
