My son is deploying soon. He's going to Kuwait. I was relieved at first. That has long been considered a safe place in the middle east. But Army reservists are dying there lately. He is also part of a Recovery Team that will go off base. That is very dangerous and I can't even think about that.
People have been asking me how I feel about it all. Well, I can only feel discomfort. Discomfort because I remember how uncomfortable it feels to be deployed. The long working days wearing a uniform, the terrible food, the bunkers, the lack of sleep, the missing home.
The time a friend is suddenly missing.The internet being down for days so a family stateside can be informed of a death before its leaked on the socials.
The loud noises and constant gun fire. The smell of the diesel generators.
Waiting in line for a few minutes of phone time after walking thru a sand storm. And being so tired, but the time difference and you need to hear their voice.
Carrying everything you need to wash yourself ...
