JUST IN🚨: TEXAS GOVERNOR GREG ABBOTT IS PUSHING A PLAN TO ELIMINATE SCHOOL PROPERTY TAXES FOR HOMEOWNERS.
That is not a small proposal.
Abbott’s property tax plan would target one of the biggest pieces of the average Texas homeowner’s tax bill: school district property taxes.
For a lot of Texans, that is the part of the bill that stings the most.
You can pay off the mortgage, own the house outright, and still get a property tax bill every year that makes it feel like the county is your silent business partner.
On paper, this sounds like a massive win for homeowners.
And politically, it is easy to see why it works.
Texas already has no state income tax. If the state also finds a way to dramatically reduce or eliminate school property taxes for homeowners, that becomes a very strong financial argument for living in Texas.
But this is where the fine print matters.
This is not law yet.
It is a proposal.
And school property taxes are not some tiny side fee hiding in the corner. They help fund public education across the state. If Texas removes that bill from homeowners, the money still has to come from somewhere.
That could mean more state funding.
It could mean using budget surpluses.
It could mean tighter limits on local spending.
Or it could mean the cost eventually shows up somewhere else wearing a fake mustache.
That is usually how government math works.
The big question is not whether homeowners want lower property taxes.
Of course they do.
The real question is whether Texas can eliminate one of the biggest property tax burdens in the country without creating a new problem on the other side.
Big idea. Big tradeoffs.
