TRUMP CITES PARDON OF DIESEL MECHANIC WHILE CRITICIZING FEDERAL REGULATIONS
President Donald Trump told supporters this week that he recently pardoned a man who had been prosecuted by the federal government over work performed on diesel trucks, using the case as an example of what he views as excessive federal regulation.

During his remarks, Trump described the case as involving a man who was facing prison for “fixing his truck” or tractor. Trump said he was so surprised by the sentence that he asked for confirmation multiple times before granting a pardon.
The case appears to refer to Wyoming diesel mechanic Troy Lake, who was convicted of violating federal emissions laws by modifying and removing emissions-control equipment on diesel engines. Lake operated a diesel repair business and was prosecuted under provisions of the federal Clean Air Act. Trump granted him a full pardon in late 2025.
Supporters of the pardon argue that the federal government criminalized routine work performed by mechanics and truck owners, turning regulatory violations into criminal offenses. They see the case as an example of government overreach into the lives of small-business owners and tradesmen.
Critics note that the case was not about simply repairing a personal vehicle. Federal prosecutors alleged that emissions-control systems were intentionally removed or altered, a violation of federal environmental law because those systems are designed to reduce pollution from diesel engines.
One important distinction is that publicly available reports indicate Lake served about seven months of a one-year federal sentence, not seven years. Trump’s comments appear to have been a rhetorical description of the case rather than a precise recitation of the sentence.
The broader debate reflects a long-running political fight over environmental regulations. Advocates of stricter enforcement argue that emissions laws protect air quality and public health. Opponents contend that federal agencies have used those laws to impose costly burdens on farmers, mechanics, truck owners, and small businesses.
For Trump’s supporters, the pardon symbolizes a promise to reduce regulations they believe punish ordinary Americans. For regulators, it highlights the challenge of enforcing environmental standards that Congress has placed into federal law. See less
