She started performing at eleven years old, for a three-dollar prize and the sound of an audience laughing for the first time.
Vaudeville stages. Radio shows. Bob Hope's USO tours made soldiers laugh thousands of miles from home. Decade after decade, Irene Ryan did the work and moved on to the next job.
Then, quietly, the work stopped finding her.
By the early 1960s, the calls had slowed to almost nothing. She was still sharp. Still ready. Hollywood just wasn't looking her way anymore.
A new CBS comedy was casting a feisty backwoods grandmother. The producers had already settled on another actress for the part. Irene asked for an audition anyway.
She walked in with her hair pinned into a bun and something close to defiance in her voice. By the time she finished reading, the room had changed its mind. "That's Granny," the producers said. They never looked back.
The Beverly Hillbillies ran for nine seasons and became the most-watched show in America. Granny — sharp-tongued, fiercely loyal, with an opinion on everything — turned into one of the most beloved characters on television. Strangers stopped calling her Irene.
She didn't mind. In 1963, she put it simply: "Six months ago, no one cared whether I was alive or dead. Now, everyone I meet asks, how old are you, really, Granny?" Not bitterness. Just honesty about what a second act feels like when it finally arrives.
When the show ended, she didn't slow down. She went to Broadway and earned glowing reviews in the musical Pippin — proof, if anyone needed it, that she had always been more than one character.
She was still performing when her health gave out. Irene Ryan died in 1973, at seventy years old, doing the only thing she'd ever really wanted to do.
Visit her grave at Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery in Santa Monica, and you won't find the word "actress" carved into the stone.
You'll find: Granny.
She earned every letter of it.

Having Him

There is a difference between salvation and a Savior; between deliverance and a Deliverer; between healing and a Healer; between redemption and a Redeemer. The first is a “thing,” the second is a Person. This may sound self-evident and elementary, but before God the difference is vast, and in actual experience the difference is incalculable. If we are not clear on the matter of His Son we will find the Christian life very difficult, if not impossible, to live. I have the “thing” because I have Him; having Him, I do not need to search for the “thing” anymore.
What do you have? An experience? A word? A doctrine? A belief? Or a Man? This is the difference between a living Christianity and a dead religion.
