Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent delivered one of the sharpest defenses of economic nationalism you’ll hear from this administration, pushing back on Vice President Pence’s defense of the old free-trade consensus.
Pence described the pre-Trump era as the right model—unfettered free trade, global supply chains, multinational corporations over domestic workers. That’s the indictment of the old GOP consensus in a single sentence.
