In the summer of 1958, Jack Kilby was the new employee at Texas Instruments in Dallas. He hadn't yet earned vacation time, so when most of the company left for summer break in July, Kilby stayed at his bench and thought. ⚡ He had been handed the problem the entire electronics industry was trying to solve: transistors, resistors, and capacitors all had to be wired together individually, which made complex circuits enormous, expensive, and unreliable. The industry called it "the tyranny of numbers." The more functions you needed a circuit to perform, the more connections you needed, and eventually, the sheer count became unmanageable.
Kilby's idea, which he sketched in his lab notebook and demonstrated to his colleagues on September 12, 1958, was to build all the components from a single semiconductor material and place them on a single piece of germanium. One tiny chip smaller than a thumbnail, containing everything. It worked. The demonstration was crude, but the principle it proved was one of the most consequential in the history of technology. 💻
The integrated circuit is the foundation of every computer, every smartphone, every medical device, every navigation system, every piece of digital technology that exists. Jack Kilby won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2000 for the invention. He worked in Dallas, and Texas Instruments is still there. The chip that built the modern world was invented in Texas. That seems like something we should know. 🌟

Be lurking today as we're going to a farm for melons🍉, grapes🍇and other fruits/veggies they have available. The special melons are yellow and you can easily eat the rinds!😁 And will be monitoring the drying out of the front bedroom closet and adjacent bathroom. The plumbers will be back Monday to do sealing and prepping for the sheet rock to cover the portions they took out to get to the pipes (which were replaced and rerouted to be above ground.) All should be done before 4 July!
