The Supplement Aisle Is the Animal, Taken Apart and Sold Back One Jar at a Time
I have been looking at the supplement aisle, and the pattern is hard to miss. A large slice of it is one animal, taken apart and sold back to you a jar at a time.
Steak is full of creatine. They tub it and sell it as a breakthrough. Mayo Clinic notes that people usually get creatine through seafood and red meat, and the name itself comes from the Greek word for flesh.
Red meat is full of carnitine. Capsuled, sold as a fat-loss aid. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements says, “Carnitine is present in animal products, especially red meat,” and even the name comes from the Latin root for flesh because it was first isolated from meat.
Beef is full of carnosine. Sold as beta-alanine, for the tingle. Carnosine is concentrated in animal muscle and brain tissue, and researchers note the name traces back to the Latin words for meat.
Butter and egg yolk carry K2. So do hard cheeses and fermented foods. Capsuled. NIH says menaquinones, the K2 family, are found in animal-based and fermented foods, and cheese is one of the important Western dietary sources.
Egg yolk carries choline, which helps build your brain. Capsuled. NIH says your “brain and nervous system need it” for memory, mood, muscle control and other functions. USDA data also lists egg yolk among the richest common food sources of choline.
Bone and skin give you collagen. Forty quid a tub. Harvard’s Nutrition Source says, “In food, collagen is naturally found only in animal flesh,” especially meat and fish with connective tissue.
A cow’s first milk is colostrum. Freeze-dried, sold to biohackers. Medical reviews describe bovine colostrum as the first milk produced after birth, rich in proteins, immunoglobulins and peptides. Mayo Clinic adds that whether it has adult human benefits is “less certain.”
Then look at the names, because the names are a confession.
Creatine, from the Greek for flesh.
Carnitine and carnosine, from the Latin for meat.
Taurine, in your energy drink, named after the bull or ox it was first isolated from. The American Chemical Society notes taurine was first isolated from ox bile.
Butyrate, the gut-health darling, named after butter, where it was first recognized, though most of the butyrate your colon uses is made when gut bacteria ferment fiber. The name points to butter. The biology points to food, microbes and metabolism.
The protein powder is often just milk, dried and stripped. Whey and casein are milk proteins; milk protein is commonly described as roughly 20 percent whey and 80 percent casein.
The D3 they push each winter is often made from lanolin obtained from sheep’s wool, though lichen-based D3 now exists too. NIH says vitamin D3 can come “from lanolin obtained from the wool of sheep.”
The retinol in the ninety-pound face cream belongs to the same vitamin A family as the preformed vitamin A found in animal foods like dairy, eggs, fish and organ meats. That does not mean every cream is literally squeezed from a yolk; many cosmetic retinoids are synthetic. But the point still stands: the compound they glamorize on your face is the same class of nutrient found ready-made in animal food.
So the supplement aisle is less a pharmacy than a butcher and a dairy, taken apart and marked up forty-fold.
To be fair, not every supplement is useless. Some people need them because of deficiency, pregnancy, vegan diets, absorption problems, medications, or athletic dosing that would be hard to reach through food alone. But even the FDA says, “Dietary supplements are regulated by the FDA as food, not as drugs,” and warns that some can have strong biological effects.
That is the part worth noticing.
The industry often takes nutrients found in meat, milk, eggs, skin, bone, fat, liver, wool and first milk, separates them, powders them, capsules them, trademarks them, and sells them back as modern health.
Sold to people who were often told for decades to fear the same foods those nutrients came from.
Eat the animal. It arrives with everything already inside, in a matrix the body recognizes, for the price of dinner.
The capsule was always just the cow, with a middleman.
