She stood barely five feet tall in a cotton dress worn thin from washing, holding a rifle steadier than most men twice her size, watching the tree line outside a small stockade fort in what is now Bastrop County. The year was 1836 and the Republic of Texas she was defending did not even have an army close enough to help her.
Sarah McSherry Hornsby had come to Texas with her husband Reuben to build a home on the Colorado River when the land was still Mexican Texas, raising a house that doubled as the only fortified position for miles when trouble came, and trouble came constantly. During the Runaway Scrape, when Santa Anna's army pushed east and terrified families abandoned their homes and fled toward Louisiana, most of Central Texas emptied out overnight. Sarah refused to run. She stayed at Hornsby Station with a handful of others, kept the cabin fortified, fed and sheltered fleeing families passing through, and held the line on a stretch of frontier that could have easily been overrun while Sam Houston's army was still gathering strength to the east. She had already survived repeated raids before the revolution even began, burying what livestock she could hide and rebuilding what got burned down, refusing every single time to abandon the home she and Reuben had built from nothing. When peace finally came and Texas won its independence, families who had fled came back through Bastrop and found the Hornsby home still standing, one of the only ones that never went dark during the worst of it. Sarah lived to see the Republic she refused to abandon become a state, and she never once described what she did as brave, only as necessary.
There is a Texas Historical Marker at the site today, a quiet stone marker for a woman who held a rifle and a homestead together during the darkest days of the revolution and never once considered leaving. Texas independence was won by men whose names fill the history books, but it was held together in more than one home by women whose names barely made it into a footnote. 🌾
