Texas History, Unfiltered
Charles Henry Nimitz, a German immigrant who'd joined the merchant marine at fourteen, arrived in Fredericksburg with the town's first settlers in 1846 and built a hotel on Main Street in 1852. It grew into a genuine local landmark, offering the only hot baths between San Antonio and El Paso, along with a brewery, saloon, and general store, and was later expanded with an unusual steamboat-shaped facade.
His grandson Chester was born across the street in 1885 and never knew his own father, who died before Chester was born. Charles became the boy's father figure instead, and Chester later credited his grandfather's steady advice, that the sea and life alike are stern taskmasters best handled by learning all you can and not worrying over what you can't control, with shaping his entire outlook.

Chester William Nimitz went on to command the entire U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War Two. His grandfather's hotel is now the National Museum of the Pacific War.

As a young sailor, Newton became deeply involved in the Atlantic slave trade.
He worked aboard slave ships and later commanded voyages himself. His life was marked by rebellion, profanity, and moral blindness.
Then, during a violent storm at sea in 1748, believing death was near, Newton cried out to God for mercy.
That moment began a conversion that would reshape the rest of his life, although his understanding and repentance unfolded gradually.
That is what makes these words so powerful.
“How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer’s ear.”
Newton was not writing about a distant religious theory.
He was writing about the name that soothed his own sorrows, confronted his sin, healed his wounded spirit, and drove back the fear of judgment.
He had discovered that grace was not ...
