On July 2, the Department of War handed Mike Rowe a $𝟏𝟎 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 at the Pentagon to formally launch Build Freedom — a national push to fix the skilled-trades shortage he’s been warning about for over a decade (Washington Examiner, Department of War).

By Rowe’s own count, the country is still sitting on roughly 𝟕 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐣𝐨𝐛𝐬 that don’t require a four-year degree. The Pentagon’s own numbers behind Build Freedom are just as stark: it projects a need for 𝟐𝟓𝟎,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 over the next decade, with only two skilled tradespeople stepping up for every five who retire (Department of War).
The initiative is launching first in Texas, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, funding scholarships and apprenticeships tied directly to the defense-industrial base — welders and electricians training for the submarines, ships, and autonomous weapons systems the Pentagon says it can’t outsource.
