One of the most common examples used to promote plant-based eating is the Roman gladiator.
The argument is familiar: the toughest fighters in the ancient world supposedly lived on barley and beans. The Romans even had a name for them, hordearii—the “barley men.” Pliny the Elder recorded the nickname, and it is often presented as proof that history’s greatest warriors thrived on a largely vegetarian diet.
There is truth in that story, but it is not the whole story.
In 1993, archaeologists uncovered a gladiator cemetery at Ephesus, the Roman capital of Asia. The site contained the remains of 68 young gladiators, some still bearing unmistakable evidence of the fatal injuries that killed them. Researchers from the Medical University of Vienna later analyzed the skeletons, publishing their findings in 2014.
The chemistry confirmed that these men consumed large amounts of barley and legumes. Their bones contained strontium levels roughly twice as high as those of ordinary citizens buried nearby, while nitrogen levels, a marker associated with animal protein intake, were comparatively low. In other words, the ancient nickname was well deserved.
What is usually left out is why they were fed that way.
The goal was not simply to maximize strength. Trainers intentionally encouraged the gladiators to carry a generous layer of subcutaneous fat.
That extra padding served a purpose in the arena. Cuts through fatty tissue produced dramatic bleeding that thrilled the crowd while reducing the likelihood of immediately damaging deeper blood vessels, nerves, and muscles. A fighter who survived with a flesh wound could return for another match, protecting the considerable investment made by his owner. The high-barley, high-bean diet helped build that protective layer.
So yes, the vegetarian gladiator existed.
But he was not the modern image of a shredded elite athlete. He was intentionally kept heavier because that body composition improved his chances of surviving repeated combat. The extra fat was part of his protective equipment.
Galen, the physician who treated gladiators after their fights, described both their diet and the physiques it produced. His concern was practical, not ideological. Gladiators were valuable assets expected to fight again. Keeping them alive mattered more than achieving the leanest possible physique, and a layer of fat often increased their odds of surviving the next contest.
That historical context is frequently overlooked today.
Using the gladiators as evidence that a plant-based diet created the ultimate athletic physique ignores the reason they were fed that way in the first place. Their menu was designed to produce a body that could better withstand cuts and survive the arena—not to create the lean, muscular build that most people picture when they hear the word “gladiator.”
The barley men were indeed barley men.
But they were also deliberately conditioned to carry extra body fat because it made them more likely to survive and remain profitable to the men who owned them.

Rep. Brandon Gill is drawing a line in the sand: We can either stop Islamic immigration now, or our children will pay the price — just like the working-class girls in Great Britain already have.
This isn't about hatred or xenophobia. This is about survival. Our job as conservatives is to conserve the country we grew up in, not import the cultures that are erasing it. While weak politicians ignore the real-world consequences of open borders and unchecked mass migration, Gill is putting his foot down and demanding that America's leadership actually prioritize American citizens and American values.
The left will call this divisive. The mainstream media will twist his words. But Gill is speaking a truth that millions of Americans already know: you cannot preserve a nation's identity, safety, and sovereignty while abandoning immigration enforcement and cultural assimilation. This is what America First actually means.
