A nineteen year old pre med student sat in his University of Texas dorm room in 1984 buying unsold IBM computers at cost, adding better memory and disk drives, and selling them to classmates for less than any retail store in the country charged, and by the end of his very first year, that side hustle had already outgrown his dorm room entirely.
Michael Dell grew up in Houston, taking apart an early Apple computer at fifteen simply to understand how it worked, and by seventeen he had already earned eighteen thousand dollars selling newspaper subscriptions, proof of a kid who understood how to build a business well before he ever built a computer company. His parents pushed him toward medicine, and he enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin planning to satisfy them, but computers had already taken hold of him completely. On May 3, 1984, from a specific dorm room in a private residence hall called Dobie, he registered a business with the State of Texas called PC's Limited, built on a single simple idea, that customers would rather buy a computer built exactly to their own specifications directly from the source than settle for whatever configuration a retail store happened to have in stock. With just one thousand dollars in starting capital, he had already sold eighty thousand dollars worth of computers by the second half of his freshman year, and he made the decision to drop out of college entirely at nineteen to run the growing company full time. The business eventually became Dell Computer Corporation and finally Dell Inc., taking the company public in 1988 and making Michael Dell the youngest CEO ever to lead a Fortune 500 company. Decades later, he took the company private again in a twenty five billion dollar deal, then orchestrated a sixty seven billion dollar acquisition of data storage company EMC in 2016, at the time the largest technology deal in history.
In 2025, Michael Dell and his wife Susan gave the University of Texas at Austin a gift of seven hundred fifty million dollars to build a new medical and research campus, pushing the couple's total giving to the university past one billion dollars, a full circle moment for a kid who once sold computers out of a dorm room the university now proudly claims as the birthplace of a global company. Texas has built fortunes in cattle and oil, but this one started with a nineteen year old, a thousand dollars, and a dorm room nobody else thought twice about. 💻
