The U.S. trade deficit fell 5.6% in June, and it is now down nearly 34% year to date.
That is a major development.
For decades, the so-called experts told Americans to accept massive trade deficits as normal.
They told us it was fine when factories closed. They told us it was fine when supply chains moved overseas.
They told us it was fine when American workers got replaced by cheaper foreign labor and hostile countries became the suppliers of things we actually need.
It was never fine.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis, the goods and services deficit dropped to $73.3 billion in June, down from $77.6 billion in May.
For the first six months of 2026, the deficit is 33.8% lower than the same period last year. Exports are up 11.7%, while imports are up only 0.4%.
That is exactly the kind of movement America needs to see.
But this is where the story gets important.
The June improvement happened because imports fell faster than exports. Imports dropped 1.8%, while exports dipped 0.9%.
So yes, the number is encouraging. Very encouraging.
But the real question is why it happened.
If American factories are replacing foreign goods, that is a win.
If businesses are buying less because prices, tariffs, high interest rates or uncertainty are squeezing demand, that is a warning sign.
This is why tariffs alone are not enough.
If we are serious about rebuilding America, we need cheap American energy, fewer regulations, faster permitting, lower taxes on production and a government that stops punishing the people who actually build things.
The trade deficit falling nearly 34% year to date is good news.
Now Washington needs to turn that number into factories, paychecks and independence from foreign supply chains.
Do you think this proves Trump’s trade policy is working, or is it too early to call it a win?
