The Trump administration has launched a public website called 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐫 — a running, searchable tally of the waste, abuse and outright theft its task force has clawed out of the federal budget since January 2025.
The numbers are staggering. According to administration officials, the task force has 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 $𝟐𝟑𝟎 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐝, stopped roughly $56 billion in fraudulent payments before the money left the door, and enforced more than $55 billion through indictments, settlements and civil penalties.
The single biggest offender is exactly where you’d expect it: healthcare. The Department of Health and Human Services accounts for about $𝟗𝟔 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐝, with Medicaid rated the tracker’s highest-impact target.
For the first time, officials say, Washington held states accountable. The ledger reports 𝘊𝘔𝘚 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘥 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘔𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘶𝘥, 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 $2 𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 $500 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘔𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘰𝘵𝘢.
The administration is quick to note that not every improper payment is a crime — some are sloppy paperwork and bad records. But the Government Accountability Office pegs government-wide improper payments at roughly $𝟑 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟑. That’s your money, and for the first time somebody is publishing the receipts.
