Dr. “Red” Duke — The True Texan Who Saved Countless Lives
Someone recently asked, “Have you ever done a story about Dr. Red Duke?”
For those who asked—here it is.
Growing up around the Dallas–Fort Worth area, many of us remember seeing Dr. Red Duke on television. With his cowboy hat, unmistakable Texas personality, and calm presence, he looked like the definition of a true Texas cowboy.
But there was so much more to this man than what we saw on television.
Dr. James Henry “Red” Duke Jr. lived an extraordinary life dedicated to medicine, service, education, and saving lives.
🩺 From Texas to Medicine
Dr. Duke was born in Ennis, Ellis County, Texas, to James Henry Duke Sr. and Helen Marion Donegan Duke.
After graduating from high school in Hillsboro, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University in 1950.
He then served two years in the U.S. Army as a tank officer with the 67th Medium Tank Battalion of the 2nd Armored Division, including time in Germany.
After his military service, his life took an unexpected turn.
Dr. Duke attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and earned a divinity degree. While studying there, he read a book about the pioneering physician Albert Schweitzer. The book profoundly changed his life's direction and inspired him to pursue medicine.
He went on to earn his M.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1960 and began his surgical career at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.
🇺🇸 One of the Most Historic Days in American History
Then came November 22, 1963.
Dr. Duke was a surgical resident at Parkland Hospital when President John F. Kennedy was shot in Dallas.
He was eating lunch in a break room when the call came for the chief of surgery, Dr. Tom Shires, to report to the emergency room.
Dr. Duke followed him.
There, he learned something almost unimaginable—the patient being rushed into Parkland was the President of the United States.
Dr. Duke became part of the medical team treating President Kennedy. He later moved to another operating room to help treat Texas Governor John Connally, who had also been seriously wounded.
One small detail from that terrible day stayed with Dr. Duke for the rest of his life.
As he left the President's operating room, he removed his gloves and threw them into a waste bin. The gloves landed on the roses that Jackie Kennedy had been carrying when she arrived at Parkland.
Even fifty years later, Dr. Duke still remembered those roses.
Two days later, he was again on duty at Parkland when Lee Harvey Oswald was brought in after being shot.
Governor Connally eventually recovered, and years later he and Dr. Duke became close friends—even hunting together.
🚁 The Birth of Life Flight in Texas
Dr. Duke went on to become a major force in modern trauma care.
He helped establish a Level I Trauma Center at Houston's Memorial Hermann Hospital and, in 1976, co-founded the first Life Flight program in Texas.
At the time, using helicopters to rapidly transport critically injured patients was revolutionary.
That idea would go on to save countless lives.
Yet Dr. Duke rarely took the credit for himself. When people praised him for Life Flight's success, he often directed the recognition toward the EMS and Life Flight crews who carried out the mission.
🌍 His Work Reached Far Beyond Texas
From 1970 to 1972, Dr. Duke helped develop the Nangarhar University School of Medicine in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.
He served first as a visiting professor and later as chief of surgery.
He developed a deep affection for the Afghan people and continued to speak warmly about his experiences there long after returning to the United States.
📺 The Doctor Millions Knew from Television
Dr. Duke eventually became a familiar face on television.
His medical reports became a nationally syndicated program, later known as “Dr. Red Duke's Health Reports,” and later still as “Texas Health Reports.” ** The program ran for approximately 18 years and brought medical information into homes across the country.
His remarkable career even inspired the television series “Buck James,” starring actor Dennis Weaver. The series ran from 1987 to 1988.
🦌 A Passion for Wildlife Conservation
Medicine wasn't Dr. Duke's only passion.
He was deeply involved in wildlife conservation and was a longtime member and former president of the Boone and Crockett Club, the historic conservation organization founded by Theodore Roosevelt.
❤️ A Legacy That Lives On
Dr. Red Duke passed away in 2015 at the age of 86.
His list of awards and accomplishments could easily fill another entire story.
But perhaps his greatest legacy wasn't a trophy, a title, or an award.
It was the lives he helped save and the medical systems he helped create.
From treating patients during one of the darkest moments in American history, to helping establish Life Flight in Texas, to educating millions through television—Dr. Duke spent his life serving others.
He wasn't just a doctor.
He was a teacher, soldier, pioneer, conservationist, and above all, a man who believed in helping people.
