He sat six feet from four of the 9/11 hijackers a month before the attack. He warned the FBI. Nobody listened until 3,000 people were dead. He spent the next 20 years explaining exactly what he saw.
James Woods was accepted into MIT on a full scholarship, majoring in political science, not the sciences most assumed a student there would pursue.
While still a student, he threw himself into theater instead, appearing in 36 plays across MIT, Harvard, and Boston's theater scene, as well as summer stock at the Provincetown Playhouse.
Acting won.
He built one of the most respected character-actor careers in Hollywood: Oscar nominations for "Salvador" and "Ghosts of Mississippi." Roles in "Once Upon a Time in America," "Casino," "The Virgin Su**ides." Two Primetime Emmys. A reputation as one of the sharpest, most unpredictable performers of his generation.
In August 2001, he boarded a flight from Boston to Los Angeles.
First class. Only four other passengers in the entire cabin.
Four men who appeared Middle Eastern.
For the full six-hour flight, Woods watched them.
They didn't eat.
They didn't drink.
They didn't sleep.
They sat rigid, upright, staring straight ahead, speaking to each other only in murmurs too quiet to make out.
Woods grew genuinely unsettled. He told a flight attendant directly that he believed the men intended to hijack the plane.
The flight attendant told him she'd noticed the same thing.
She informed the first officer. The crew reported it to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Nothing came of it.
Woods flew home. Told his girlfriend the flight was fine, aside, he joked uneasily, from the terrorists sitting across the aisle.
He tried to put it out of his mind.
On September 11, 2001, he watched the towers fall like everyone else.
A friend visiting his home that evening brought up the flight, unprompted.
Woods thought about it overnight.
The next morning, he called the FBI himself.
Agents visited his home on September 13th to hear the full account.
Years later, Woods said he'd come to believe he'd identified two of the men specifically, one who went on to be aboard Flight 175, another aboard Flight 77, describing details he was asked to keep private for any potential legal proceedings.
He's said he was told, unofficially, through a source outside the FBI, that all four men were connected to the attacks.
The FBI itself has never publicly confirmed that account.
Woods has spent over two decades since defending the way the story's been retold, correcting the record whenever it gets exaggerated into something he never actually said: that he reported it before September 11th, rather than only after.
A scholarship to MIT he never used. A flight he almost forgot about, until an entire country couldn't.
