Vietnam, November 1966.
Foley was leading a small reconnaissance unit when the jungle suddenly became a trap. Fifty-two Americans were surrounded. Visibility was poor. Ammunition was limited. Radio contact was weak. Reinforcements were still hours away.
There was no easy way out.
Foley chose to stay.
For five hours, he moved through the fighting, directing his men, helping the wounded reach cover, redistributing ammunition, and coordinating support. Then he was wounded.
Then again.
Then a third time.
He refused evacuation.
His focus remained on the men under his command. If someone needed help, he went toward them. If ammunition was running low, he moved it where it was needed. If a position was threatened, he was there.
Eventually, air support arrived and the attackers withdrew.
The reported outcome was extraordinary: all 52 Americans survived the battle.
Only after confirming his men were accounted for did Foley allow himself to be evacuated.
Years later, he received the Medal of Honor for his actions.
The decoration represented one battle. But the meaning was much simpler.
He had 52 men depending on him.
And he refused to leave them behind.
“They were my responsibility.”
That was the weight of command.
