Yes, this is real. There is a milk on US shelves right now made with no cow at all. The brand is Bored Cow. The protein in it is made by a genetically engineered fungus called Trichoderma reesei, grown in tanks. The FDA signed off on it in 2020. The front of the carton says animal free. Flip it over and the allergy line says contains milk, because the protein is chemically the same as cow whey, so anyone with a milk allergy can still react to it. It is sold at Target and Sprouts. Nobody asked you if you wanted fungus milk. It just showed up in the dairy case. Read the back, not the front.
