There is a dialect of German that exists nowhere on earth except the Texas Hill Country, and it is nearly gone.
Germans arrived there in the 1840s and founded New Braunfels, Fredericksburg, and a string of smaller places. They were cut off from Germany for a century, so their language stopped where it was and then started borrowing.
The result is its own thing. Old-fashioned German grammar carrying English words with no German equivalents in Texas. A skunk. A pickup. Air conditioning. Speakers say things that would baffle anybody in Germany.
There was a time when whole counties ran in German, with German newspapers and German schools. Then came the world wars, and English-only schooling, and parents who decided their children would be better off without it.
Linguists at the University of Texas have been recording the last speakers, who are now mostly in their eighties.
