He died in his JROTC uniform, holding a door open for strangers. 7 years later, he graduated from West Point anyway.
His name was Peter Wang.
Born in Brooklyn, raised with a dream of becoming a soldier.
He joined JROTC the moment he started at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
He was fifteen years old.
On February 14, 2018, a gunman opened fire inside the school.
Witnesses said Wang held open an exit door, pushing classmates and staff through it, refusing to let go even as the danger closed in around him.
Dozens escaped because of it.
Peter did not.
He was found in a hallway, still in his JROTC uniform.
His classmate Kelsey Friend put it simply: "He died a gentleman holding the door for other students."
At his funeral, a uniformed Army officer hand-delivered a letter to his grieving parents.
Peter had been posthumously accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
He was buried in his JROTC uniform, the life he'd always wanted finally made official, too late for him to wear it.
For his actions, the U.S. Army posthumously awarded him the Medal of Heroism, its highest honor for JROTC and ROTC cadets.
In 2025, seven years after his death, West Point honored him again alongside his graduating class.
A fifteen-year-old who never got the chance to actually serve.
The country he wanted to protect found a way to make him one of its own anyway.
Rest easy, Peter.
