About 500 cows and calves were standing on 40 acres of pasture that got smaller by the hour. Record rain had the Trinity River rising near Liberty, Texas.
By Sunday, May 31, 2015, the herd was cut off. "It's bad and getting worse by the minute," a cowboy named Jarrod Land told a TV crew.
Dozens of cowboys and volunteers went in on horseback and in airboats. Cattle don't like to leave high ground and swim, and it took hours to push the herd into the water. The calves struggled. Cowboys roped some of them and tied them alongside an airboat so they wouldn't go under.
Once the herd was across there was nowhere to put it but U.S. Highway 90.
The riders drove it down the road for about eight miles and right down Main Street in the town of Dayton. People lined the curb with their kids to watch. The sheriff's office said it looked like a scene "from an 1800s-era Texas cattle drive."
Some cattle died. Hundreds walked into a rail yard on the highest ground in the county and stayed there until the water went down.
