1. Fructose Enters the Liver “Gateway”
• Almost all dietary fructose is taken up by your liver first (via GLUT2 and GLUT5 transporters).
• Inside hepatocytes, fructokinase converts fructose → fructose-1-phosphate, and aldolase B splits that into glyceraldehyde and dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP).
2. Convergence with Glycolysis
• Glyceraldehyde is phosphorylated to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P).
• DHAP and G3P are classic glycolysis intermediates. From here, they follow the same steps as glucose-derived carbons:
1. Lower-pathway glycolysis: → pyruvate
2. Pyruvate dehydrogenase: → acetyl-CoA
3. TCA cycle & oxidative phosphorylation: → ~30 ATP per original fructose molecule
3. Export of Fuels to the Bloodstream
The liver doesn’t keep all of those carbons for itself. It can:
• Re-assemble them into glucose (via gluconeogenesis) and release it back into circulation.
• Convert pyruvate → lactate, which muscles, heart, brain, and other tissues can take up and burn.
• Package acetyl-CoA into triglycerides (which travel as free fatty acids)—another fuel for muscle and many organs.
4. Peripheral Uptake and ATP Production
Once fructose carbons are re-broadcast as glucose, lactate, or fatty acids, every cell with mitochondria (and even red blood cells via anaerobic glycolysis) can:
1. Take them up through their respective transporters (GLUT1/GLUT3 for glucose, MCTs for lactate, FATPs for fatty acids).
2. Fuel glycolysis or β-oxidation to generate acetyl-CoA.
3. Run the TCA cycle + electron transport chain to produce ATP.
And to sum up… fruit is a much needed food source for our body in so many amazing ways.
