When the bank chained the gate on the family farm, 16-year-old Evelyn Mae Stratton took her daddy’s old .22 rifle, walked straight to the county courthouse, and laid it on the judge’s desk. “This gun has fed us for ten years,” she said. “Shoot me or give us thirty more days.” The judge, who had eaten squirrel she shot when he was hungry in 1933, wrote “30 days grace” on the foreclosure notice and signed it—those thirty days turned into forever. The rifle and the signed paper hang side by side in the Dalhart museum.
