When the Mongols built the largest empire in history, they ate dried meat, mare's milk, and blood. They never sat down to a bowl of lentils.
When the British aristocracy ate three meat courses a day in the 19th century, the working poor lived on bread and dripping. The aristocracy was taller, lived longer, and bred more children.
In every society where meat was available, the wealthy ate it daily, and the poor ate it when they could afford to.
The lentil was never anyone's first choice. It was a backup, eaten when the meat ran out.
